EMDR Counselling Victoria: Registered Practitioners, Evidence-Based Trauma Processing

A Body-Based Approach to Processing Trauma That Talk Therapy Alone Cannot Always Reach

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy developed specifically for working with traumatic and distressing memories. Recognized by the EMDR International Association as a first-line treatment for PTSD, it uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain process and metabolize stuck memories in a way that talking alone often cannot reach. Rather than requiring clients to describe experiences in detail, EMDR works directly with how trauma is held in the body and nervous system. At Your Path Counselling in Victoria BC, sessions are available in person at 821 Burdett Ave, Suite 303 and via phone or video for clients anywhere in BC.

Your sense of safety and wellbeing is the priority throughout the process, and the pace and direction of sessions are set by you. Before any processing begins, your practitioner works collaboratively with you to build personalized emotional regulation tools so you feel well-resourced. EMDR often produces faster results than talk therapy alone and is less verbally demanding, which many clients find makes it more accessible. Our registered EMDR practitioners bring specific training in trauma-informed care. You can read more about our clinical approaches on our techniques page.

The Eight Phases of EMDR

  • History taking and treatment planning: An in-depth first session to understand your history, identify target memories, and develop a treatment plan.
  • Preparation: Building personalized emotional regulation tools so you feel grounded and resourced before processing begins.
  • Assessment: Identifying the specific memory, associated beliefs, body sensations, and emotional charge.
  • Desensitization: Bilateral stimulation while attending to the target memory, reducing its emotional intensity.
  • Installation: Strengthening the positive belief that replaces the negative one held in the memory.
  • Body scan: Checking for any remaining physical tension or distress connected to the memory.
  • Closure: Returning to a stable, grounded state at the end of each session regardless of where processing ended.
  • Re-evaluation: Reviewing progress at the start of subsequent sessions and adjusting the plan as needed.

What EMDR Therapy Can Help With

  • Trauma and PTSD, including single-incident and complex developmental trauma
  • Childhood adverse experiences and attachment wounds
  • Anxiety and panic, particularly where a specific triggering memory is involved
  • Depression linked to unprocessed loss or traumatic events
  • Addictive behaviours where trauma underlies the addictive pattern
  • Grief, complicated bereavement, and specific phobias

EMDR can be used as a standalone treatment or integrated with individual counselling or long-term psychotherapy as part of a broader plan. Visit our FAQs for information on how EMDR sessions are structured and what to expect from a first appointment.
